Flood Attenuation Opportunities: Mining in the Flooplain

Curt Campbell, PE, CFM, LEED AP ND

Surface mining for sand and gravel has long been a critical part of our economy and is a critical component of the upstream supply chain for infrastructure development. Due to the recent hurricane flooding mining in the floodplain has been targeted as a strain on the water bodies in which the activity is performed. This presentation looks at how these facilitates relate to the water bodies they are in proximity to and the adaptive reuse of these sites as flood attenuation facilities and the potential benefits to the environment around them.
