Soil Evaluation for Erosion and Sedimentation Control Design

Alan Stahnke

Effective soil erosion control is critical to this countries continued ability to provide food, fiber, clean water, and clean air. Whether we are talking about erosion on agricultural land or in metropolitan areas, the movement of soil whether by air or water has the potential for negative impacts. Through years of research we have been able to identify those characteristics that most impact a soils susceptibility to erosion.

I’ve been with the NRCS for 23 years doing jobs ranging from a field soil scientist to the state GIS specialist. A majority of my career was as a field soil scientist making soil surveys in Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, and Alaska. I am currently the State Soil Scientist stationed in Temple Texas. I was raised in Stephenville Texas. I worked at various agricultural related jobs including pecan orchards, peanut farm and a dairy. After an enlistment in the United States Marine Corps I attended Tarleton State University and received a Bachelor’s of Science in Agronomy with a soils emphasis. My wife Mary is an English teacher at Salado ISD and my daughter is a senior in college and my son is a junior in high school.
