EC19: Theory in Practice: Wind Erosion Control Prediction System (WEPS)

Primary Presenter: David G. Walker, Ph.D, CPESC, P.Ag

Date Offered: Monday, February 20, 2006

Technical Level: Advanced

Time Offered: 8:30 AM - 5:00 PM

Technology Section: TS-6: (Erosion & Sediment Control)

Course Description:

Learn enough basic theory on wind erosion to understand how to select practical methods for controlling airborne soil particles generated from both wind (saltation) and mechanical (road traffic) sources. Actual case studies will show you employed methods and materials that have proven effective over time. WEPS will be used to demonstrate the relative effectiveness of alternative control methods and to illustrate the relative risk of soil loss in different climates. Bring a laptop computer and work along with the instructors.

When you leave, you will be able to:

  • understand wind erosion processes in order to assess the risk of soil loss;
  • assess when and how to use chemical dust suppressant products;
  • and determine what plant density and cover is needed for effective erosion control.

Note: Software will be available on CD-ROM but because of limited time, participants should have good basic skills with their computer operating systems. Microsoft Windows 2000, Windows XP or Vista required.

Learning Objectives:

  • Understand wind erosion processes in order to assess the risk of soil loss,
  • Provide a scientific basis for choosing wind erosion control methods,
  • Learn how to reduce soil erodibility,
  • Learn how to reduce wind speed at ground level,
  • Learn when and how to use chemical dust suppressant products,
  • Learn what temporary methods work best until vegetation can do the job,
  • What plant density and cover is needed for effective erosion control,
  • What methods for plant establishment work best.

Benefits:

  • Be able to demonstrate that best available methods were used.
  • Reduce costs by using effective methods for erosion control.
  • Help protect and heal the environment by using plants for erosion control.
  • Shop the erosion control exhibits knowing what to look for and what questions to ask.
  • Have fun while you learn.
  • Visit places you've never seen.

Testimonials:

"I thought is was a very good class to basic understanding of dust issue.!" -John T. Morning
