IACET Frequently Asked Questions
The International Erosion Control Association (IECA) is now approved as an authorized provider by the International Association for Continuing Education and Training (IACET), and may offer IACET CEUs for its programs that qualify under the ANSI/IACET Standards, internationally recognized as good standards of practice.
What does it mean to be an "authorized provider" of IACET CEUs?
IECA underwent a lengthy application process that included submitting organizational information and event materials, being evaluated during a site visit, and agreeing to adhere to the IACET criteria. As a result, IECA received authorized provider status in February 2015.
What is the benefit of being designated as an "authorized provider"?
While the term "CEU" is not trademarked, not all organizations have an equal commitment to quality in awarding CEUs. IACET seeks to ensure a high level of credibility and accountability from its over 575 authorized providers.
What constitutes one CEU?
One CEU equals ten contact hours of participation in organized continuing education classes and/or training conducted by a qualified instructor. A contact hour is equivalent to one 60-minute interaction between an instructor and the participant.
What is the minimum period of contact for which a CEU can be awarded?
A CEU cannot be granted for learning events that are less than one hour in length.
Which IECA professional development offerings qualify for IACET CEUs?
The entire organization was approved as an authorized provider, however only certain classes will receive CEU credit. At Environmental Connection 2015 all full day courses offered IACET CEUs. At Environmental Connection 2016 most full and half day courses will be offering IACET CEUs. As we move forward the goal is to provide IACET CEUs to professional development offerings with clear objectives to meet learner needs and in which participant learning can be assessed (online courses, one hour sessions, etc). CEUs are not available for plenary sessions, exhibit hall presentations, meetings, social events, archived online events, or those sessions that provide participants with information about a particular product or company.
What are the requirements in order to receive CEU credit(s)?
There are two main components to be aware of regarding receiving your CEU credit. First, each participant will either sign a check-in roster or be scanned in at the learning event. Participants must attend the 90% of the learning event for while they are registered in order to receive credit. Second, each participant must take a quiz or knowledge check at the completion of the learning event. You must score a 70% or better on that quiz in order to receive credit. Both the attendance requirement and knowledge requirement must be met in order to receive CEU credit. You will be able to download your certificate 7 days after the class at ieca.org/certificates.
How will I know how many CEUs I have earned?
Each certificate will include the number of CEUs earned. A historical record for each participant will be kept by IECA for a period of at least seven years. Collecting participants' current home addresses will help ensure that records are accurate as participants move between jobs.
How does IECA ensure the quality of instructors?
IECA has and will continue to peer review all abstracts and instructor credentials when courses are submitted. Instructors are required to provide their resume along with their professional development over the past year and courses they have taught. Our goal will always be to provide top notch education.
Does the instructor have any discretion in determining whether CEUs are awarded?
An instructor who determines that a participant has not gained satisfactory knowledge from a particular professional development event may suggest to IECA that a participant's certificate be withheld. Final discretion on awarding CEUs will reside with IECA.
