Stream Restoration Basics and Applications

This course provides an overview of the stream restoration process from development to design. We will address the major stream restoration design areas and the associated tools, computations, and confirmations, including: Fluvial Geomorphology: Stream patterns (meandering, braided, etc.), physical features of meanders, channel evolution, floodplain features, and stream classification Hydrology: Determining appropriate design discharge for main channel geometric design and overbanks areas Hydraulics and Channel Dimensions: Development of the main channel width, depth and slope *Stream bank problems and protection techniques, including biotechnical methods We will also discuss the key elements of successful stream restoration projects and team development. In addition, we will outline the best practices in stream restoration needs, including: identification, development of timelines and project objectives, and identification of design team disciplines and expertise requirements. And finally, we'll take a look at how to best interweave these elements in your planning to produce a sound, successful, and sustainable stream restoration project.

Dr. David Williams, PE, CFM, PH, CPESC, the president of DTW and Associates, and 2 time president of IECA, has over 40 years of experience in the water resources industry and is known nationally and internationally for his contributions to the industry. He is well versed in the widely used computer programs HEC-1, HEC-HMS, HEC-2, HEC-RAS, and HEC-6. In addition to teaching these and other topics, Dr. Williams is also a nationally recognized expert in sedimentation engineering, streambank protection, stream restoration, erosion control and in developing innovative solutions to difficult hydraulic and hydrologic design problems in rivers and estuaries. He is the recipient of the 2013 IECA Sustained Contributor of the Year Award, a Fellow of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), and was the chair of the ASCE Sedimentation, Computational Hydraulics, Stream Restoration, and Risk, Uncertainty & Probabilistic Approaches Committees.
