Industrial Stormwater, Contact Stormwater, Process Water, Wastewater: What?

Juliana Morelli, PG, REM, CPESC, CESSWI

The NPDES Program mandates permits to discharge wastes into waters of the United States. Industrial stormwater management through the Multi-Sector General Permit provides a simple option for most facilities to discharge stormwater associated with industrial activity. Industrial facilities can find themselves in trouble, however, when non-stormwater flows are generated and discharged via stormwater only outfalls. This course evaluates common non-stormwater flows at industrial facilities and provides site management and permitting strategies to avoid non-compliance.

Learning Objectives:

  • What is industrial stormwater under the MSGP (and what is not)?
  • What types of common industrial activities generate a non-stormwater flow and how can they be managed?
  • What are the implications of the proposed EPA MSGP on the future of water quality monitoring at industrial facilities?
