Coir Geo Textiles for Erosion Control

Gowthamsivan Sivagnanam, MS

This Course presents the application of coir geo textile for preventing soil erosion and developing a self sustaining vegetation in slopes. Further few case studies where Coir geo textile has been used for preventing soil erosion and their results are discussed. Soil erosion along degraded hill slopes has been a serious concern throughout the world. A permanent and self sustaining vegetative cover is an ideal solution for erosion problems. Coir geo textile is a woven fabric made from coir yarn/fibre extracted from coconut husk. Coir geo textile as a ground cover, helps reduce the velocity of runoff water, resist washing down and keeps the soil intact, this supports the seeds sown and seedlings from being washed away in water. The coir geo textile helps in conserving the moisture content, which supports growth of vegetation. Geo textile made of coir is ideally suited for low cost due to its availability in abundance at very low price compared to other synthetic geo textiles. The plant species selected for vegetation should be suitable for the climatic conditions and should take up deep rooting system after germination. When seeds germinate, they grow through the gaps in the mesh and covers all over the bio degradable coir.

Learning Objectives:

  • Get in depth knowledge about Coir geo textile and its properties.
  • Understand how and where Coir geo textile can be used for preventing soil erosion and support vegetation establishment.
  • Learn various types of Coir geo textiles and other coir products and understanding the best practices for using them.
