Presented by William Lord this presentation will take an in depth look at the pressure on domestic water supplies and stormwater runoff from impervious surfaces becomes more of a problem, rain water harvesting can lessen pressure on water supplies and reduce stormwater runoff. Rain water harvesting has been used for centuries. In ancient Rome and Byzantium water was stored in huge underground cisterns to help walled citied withstand sieges. In climates with alternating wet and dry seasons water can be stored in cisterns to provide supply in the dry season. Rainwater harvesting can provide economical irrigation water as well as non-potable water for domestic toilet flushing, clothes washing, and car washing if plumbing codes allow.

In February 2016, IECA launched its new and improved online learning management system (LMS). This new system has been completely integrated into IECA's website providing members a single sign on experience. The site houses over 100 courses ranging from recorded IECA webinars, online courses and vendor webinars to package deals and currently hot topics in the industry. This has been a year process for IECA and the education staff. Many staff members worked tirelessly on the implementation, design and testing of the new system. “After months of hard work I am delighted we are launching our new Learning Management System,” says Joanna Fetherolf, IECA’s Director of Education. “IECA’s eLearning will now provide attendees with a user-friendly experience and additional features, such as a refined search engine, tracking of student transcripts and access to free member events. IECA recently announced the recipient of the Most Distinguished Technical Paper Award for Environmental Connection 2017. Enhancing Soil Begins with Soil Biology and a Stable Soil Microclimate has been named the 2017 winner of this award. This honor recognizes presenters who have demonstrated excellence within the context of their Environmental Connection technical presentation. The paper was submitted by Jerry L. Hatfield, Ph.D. Dr. Hatfield will be recognized for this paper at the Environmental Connection 2017 Awards Ceremony and the presentation can be seen at the conference.
On December 22, 2008 the failure of an ash dike at the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) Kingston Fossil Plant in Roane County, TN caused a monumental environmental disaster where approximately 5.4 million cubic yards (CYs) of coal ash was released over 300 acres that choked the adjacent Emory River, disrupted electrical power, ruptured a natural gas line and water line, and covered a railway and local roadways. Zeller's keynote presentation will provide attendees a look into this disaster and his experience serving as the EPA's on-site coordinator for the cleanup and recovery efforts.
