Airport Facilities and Permitting

Patricia Luse

While complying with an ever-increasing complexity of environmental permits and rules at the federal, state and local levels, airports are trying to incorporate a sustainability perspective in a corporate model that includes attention to the variety of environmental rules and permits. Sustainability includes environmental obligations which can be represented in the anacronym EONS developed by the Airports Council International – North America. EONS define airport sustainability as, “a holistic approach to managing an airport to ensure the integrity of the Economic viability, Operational efficiency, Natural Resource conservation and Social responsibility of the airport.” The knowledgeable environmental representative for an airport will not only advise what are the rules and permits, write plans, but also how to implement programs and procedures to the various stakeholders involved.
